Apart from the engine and the gearbox, the clutch is probably the most important component in your car or van. Without it, you would not be able to smoothly change gear and you would not be able to engage the engine properly - you'd have to try coasting everywhere.
When you press the clutch pedal, the clutch plate is held against the pressure plate, allowing the gears to be changed in the meantime. When you release the clutch pedal, the clutch plate engages with the engine's flywheel, harnessing the engine's power to turn the wheels and drive you forward.
The condition of the clutch system affects the overall performance of your car or van. A worn clutch will increase your fuel consumption, costing you money, and it'll make your car less powerful too. If you let it get too bad, your car may lose drive completely.

Are you finding it hard to engage gear? Hear that classic crunching noise? Sometimes a failed clutch will make it impossible to engage any gear at all. Juddering during the pull-away can also be a tell-tale sign. However, the most definitive sign is a noticeable burning smell. That smell tells you that the clutch is under severe strain and may need to be checked.
Another good clue is if the RPM increases when you press the throttle, but your car or van's speed does not increase at a similar rate. Burned out clutches fail to fully transfer the engine's power to the wheels.
There are several simple ways to help your clutch last longer, saving you money. Don't rest your foot on the clutch pedal when you're driving, and if you're stationary, put your car into neutral. Don’t use the clutch to hold your car on a hill; use the handbrake.
It's important to have some free play in the pedal movement, a "buffer zone", before the clutch starts to have effect. You (or we) can adjust the cable housing or the clutch rod to achieve this. Also, if you have hydraulic clutch control, you should make sure the reservoir is topped up just as you would top up your brake fluid.
